This bill amends Washington law to recognize posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as an occupational disease for certain workers under the state's workers' compensation system. It adds county coroners and medical examiner personnel to the list of occupations already covered (firefighters, law enforcement officers, and public safety telecommunicators), allowing them to claim workers' compensation for PTSD. For county coroners and medical examiner personnel hired after January 1, 2026, the bill requires a pre-employment psychological examination by a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist to rule out pre-existing PTSD, with an exception if the employer does not provide the examination. The bill also excludes PTSD claims when the disorder is directly attributed to disciplinary action, job transfer, layoff, demotion, or termination taken in good faith by an employer.
